When Viktor Schauberger was speaking of rising cold and falling heat, what he was referring to was ‘process’. Nature and the Universe are always in transition. There are cooling processes and heating processes. Predominant to either of those processes is whether they are diverging (centrifugal) or converging centripetal.
Viktor was one of the first to point out this fact as a necessary foundational piece in order not to destroy the predominant process. The major clue in the questionnaire for the essay was “Newton should have asked how the apple got up there in the first place”.
Tenuous matter collects at a ‘center’ and freezes into a solid while it is ‘stacking’ outwards. This is how any body grows, by gases condensing into liquids and solids, hence falling heat, and rising cold. The Earth and everything that grows upward or outward follows this principle. Of course the other, diverging process exists, but is only predominant in industrialization, whereas nature is quite discrete about it.
In standing observation, the heat ends up in the Earth body and everything it grows, while cold ends up at the extents. Warm bodies are surrounded by cold space, and the entire universe runs from a conspicuous asymmetry between volume and density. It is this cold volume of tenuous energy that warms as it falls and concentrates (stacking into a rising and freezing body which retains heat at its center) All atoms are created just as a seed creates a tree, from the falling rays of the sun that warm as the approach the earth’s surface. Hot and cold are therefore relative terms and mean nothing without a center reference point, which defines relative stasis. Both processes exist simultaneously, with life formation leading the way overall.

In direct opposition to his materialist contemporaries, Viktor Schauberger subscribed to a vitalist conception of Nature. He believed that Mother Earth was a living organism and that her lifeblood was water, which was the supporter of all life. It was only by recognizing the sentience of Nature that he was able to learn its distinct governing principles. This insight ultimately allowed him to identify the supreme importance of temperature within the natural world, wherein he stated that ‘Nature worked by rising cold and falling heat’.
Schauberger meant that Nature accomplished this work through the implosive and resonant ‘original motion’ which “invites, attracts and draws along”. By way of establishing our premises, the descriptors of ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ are not true attributional antinomies. They are continuous variables that are correlated with the relative frequency at which the given medium vibrates. As such, through the impartation or dissipation of energy, temperatures can transition from hot to cold and vice versa, each time passing a point of equilibrium that exists between the two distinct perceptions.
Once ‘rising cold’ and ‘falling heat’ passes this equilibrium, however they transform into ‘rising heat’ and ‘falling cold’ respectively. It follows that Schauberger believed that Nature worked by returning polarities to a transitory state of equilibrium that represented the highest potential of the medium.
Viktor discovered that water reached this point of thermal equilibrium at exactly 4 degrees Celsius, which he referred to as its ‘anomaly point’. At this temperature, the substance possessed its maximum density, making it essentially incompressible. In this spatially and thermally neutral condition, Viktor believed water to be in its highest natural condition, insisting that it promoted health, bestowed vitality and possessed maximal life-giving potential. Temperature deviations away from the anomaly point were categorized as ‘negative gradients’, while deviations toward the anomaly point reflected ‘positive gradients’. These ‘negative gradients’ encouraged the impotency of the potential energy stored within the water while ‘positive gradients’ resulted in the accumulation of non-Cartesian potential energy.
Schauberger recognized that Nature necessitatively mediates pressure using both gradients because equilibrium is only ever transitory. After all, a stable equilibrium would produce a stagnant uniformity that does not exist in Nature. As such, in order to maintain the balance between creation and destruction, Nature employs the positive gradient to generate structure and potential while the negative gradient allows for its selective destruction and recycling. At this point, it becomes clear that Schauberger must have meant that “Nature worked by rising cold and falling heat” on balance, which creates the foundation for a largely harmonious natural world that is still imbued with diversity and heterogeneity. But where does this work occur?
Springs
There is a subterranean layer of anomaly point water that is subject to the positive gradient forces from all directions. From above, with the assistance of gravity, rainwater falls from the clouds in a downward spinning movement that generates powerful bioelectric and biomagnetic fields. Once it reaches the surface of the Earth, it imparts its atmospheric energies and nutrients into animals, vegetation and soil.
Positive gradient forces attract the rainwater underground, allowing it to escape the heating influence of the Sun by drawing itself toward the ‘anomaly point’ layer. From below, the extreme pressure from the activity in the mantle provides upward pressure on juvenile water that has been formed by the synthesis of elemental hydrogen and oxygen.
As it escapes this pressure, it loses energy and is similarly drawn toward this ‘anomaly point’ layer. In exerting this implosive pressure on the ‘anomaly point’ layer, these positive gradients attempt to compress the uncompressible, which forces the ‘anomaly point’ water to escape the pressure through lateral motion.
Downward movements will not alleviate the pressure so this water inevitably presses itself upward toward the Earth surface, being squeezed by positive gradient forces until it emerges as a natural spring.
This explains why spring water possesses the temperature of 4 degree Celsius at the source. As such, through the positive gradient forces of ‘rising cold’ and ‘falling heat’, Nature provides a supply of high-quality, life-affirming water from the unseen world to the seen world.
Rivers
When rivers are allowed to meander as Nature dictates, the temperature differentials within the water allow it to flow in a ‘Universal Cycloid Motion’, which combines orbital, rotational and circulatory motions into a complex spiral-vortical form.
The water that remains at this ‘anomaly point’ remains at the centre of the flow form and possesses the fastest flow rate, pulling the surrounding water along with it. This surrounding water, which possesses slightly higher temperatures, establishes implosive positive gradient forces on the river water such that Nature can build complex structures, adhering to non-Euclidean geometries, within the water medium itself.
When water flows in its natural spiral-vortical motion, it is able to regulate its own temperature by intermittently protecting segments of the water from the Sun.
Further, through this motion, water is able to reactively take on and deposit ‘emulsified’ mineral nutrients while accumulating subtle energies, which works to enhance life within the river and to stimulate symbiotic ecological activity at its banks.
This enhancement, however, is vulnerable to changes in temperature. For instance, when trout appear to effortlessly stay in the same position despite the flow of water in the opposite direction, they utilize their particular biology to be drawn or sucked into the special geometries of structured water.
Once when Schauberger was observing a trout, he experimented by instructing boiling water to be introduced upstream to temporarily alter the temperature of the flow form.
As a result of this intervention, the trout lost its ability to resist the stream and was forced downstream in the resulting unstructured flow form. This experiment revealed the largely imperceptible, yet essential, structuring that Nature automatically manifests when she is not interrupted.
Atmosphere
The four principal zones of the Earth’s atmosphere each contain a distinct layer of ‘anomaly point’ water that acts as a dialectic layer between the positive and negative ionized charges that exist above and below. It is the positive gradient of ‘rising cold’ and ‘falling heat’ that are correlated with the compression of these ionized charges that cause the formation of sophisticated ecological capacitors that encapsulate the Earth.
Callum Coats proposes that the decreasing radius of each dielectric layer of the atmosphere allows the Earth to amplify the Sun’s electromagnetic essential life energy. In this way, Nature employed implosion, to not only insulate Earth from harsh cosmic radiation and the bleakness of space, but to refine these energies in order to stimulate the establishment of complex forms of life.
Magnetism
The original motion of structured water closely resembles the conjugate geometry of the dielectric field that allows for the phenomenon of magnetism to exist ab extra to the plane of inertia.
The conjugate geometry of a magnetic field is found in its centripetal hyperboloid and its centrifugal torus. The hyperboloid is manifest as vortices at either pole, representing acceleration toward the plane of inertia, while the torus represents the force and motion of Cartesian space that drains energy from the plane of inertia.
Metaphysician and field theorist, Ken Wheeler, theorizes that this geometry is a modality of ether perturbation that gives rise to all matter and represents the principal architecture of the universe.
Interestingly, magnets are quantitatively identical before and after they are magnetized, which means that their undeniable and unique properties are strictly qualitative and non-physical in nature. This is also true for water that is quantitively identical before and after it is structured, yet the qualitative implications of structuring water are profound and readily observable. In keeping with Wheeler’s observations, Nature may employ ‘rising cold’ and ‘falling heat’ in order to manifest resonant structures that are coherent with the non-physical forces of which Nature itself is composed.
Ultimately, Viktor Schauberger was an enigmatic iconoclast who discovered profound truths of Nature from personal observations that were informed by his unique intuitive esotericism. By way of resonating with Viktor’s statement that “Nature worked by rising cold and falling heat”, we can personally cohere to the divinity of creation ourselves by tempering the destructive conflict within our own natures and embracing the positive gradient toward our anomalous potential.
